“Cross for Writers,” Oil
The killing of 28-year-old Nazimuddin Samad in early 2016 followed a string of similar attacks in 2015 when at least five secular bloggers and publishers were killed by radical Islamists in the India subcontinent who attacked them in "vengeance" for their writings. Three motorcycle-riding assailants hacked and shot to death Samad when he was walking with a friend after finishing his law class.
All these crosses represent for me the interface of order and chaos; they are portraits of good and evil in a particular place or of a particular event. I think of each of them as a painted prayer.
